The Income Tax Bill 2025 has sparked intense debates in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, with opposition members vehemently protesting against certain amendments. The government introduced the bill to streamline taxation policies, enhance transparency, and modernize income tax regulations. However, opposition parties claim that the legislation imposes an unnecessary financial burden on middle-class taxpayers and small businesses.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), which reviewed the Income Tax Bill 2025, presented its report in Lok Sabha on January 31. The committee, chaired by Jagdambika Pal, adopted the report by a 15-11 majority vote. The opposition members criticize the report, stating that their dissenting opinions were ignore.
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge demand that the JPC report withdrawn and reintroduced with amendments incorporating opposition concerns. He urged the Rajya Sabha Chairman to take action and ensure that all perspectives are considere before passing the bill.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the Income Tax Bill 2025, dismissing opposition claims as “false and misleading.” He asserted that the amendments were introduce to enhance compliance, prevent tax evasion, and simplify tax laws for individuals and businesses. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman echoed these sentiments, arguing that the bill ensures transparency and efficiency in tax collection.
The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated disruptions as opposition MPs staged protests against the bill.
